I started this website because I like all kinds of music. I like classical music and I like folk music. I sing in two choruses (Nova Singers and South Florida Jubilee), plus I play piano and guitar. I am not a professional musician, but I like to make music and I like to hear others make music.
But when I looked for music events to attend, I had a hard time finding the listings. Free concerts were listed on my other websites, Miami on the Cheap, Fort Lauderdale on the Cheap and Palm Beach on the Cheap. Local newspapers had some listings, but no one had all the great music events going on listed in one place. I found websites for bands and some genres of music, but I couldn’t find any central source that listed all the music events in South Florida.
So I decided to create one. Welcome to Music in South Florida!
To succeed, this website needs and invites the participation of all who love music. The calendar is created from user-generated listings. So please list your music events, and encourage your friends to list their music events, to help make this calendar more complete. Listing your event is always free, and we also offer an option to buy enhanced listings or advertising to give your event more prominence.
I don’t remember when I learned to sing. My mother was a singer, and we always had music around. I took piano lessons and worked on school and community productions when I was in high school, then mostly gave up music, except for going to concerts and occasionally playing piano around the house.
When I moved from Miami-Dade County to Broward County in 2014, I got involved with the Broward Folk Club, then with Nova Singers, a community chorus, and then with South Florida Jubilee, a women’s a cappella group. I also started playing guitar and ukulele.
I’m a writer, editor and communications consultant by trade. I worked for 30 years at newspapers (my last job was at The Miami Herald), then moved to online publishing, and have published my own websites since 2009. Miami on the Cheap, Fort Lauderdale on the Cheap and Palm Beach on the Cheap showcase free and cheap things to do, discounts and deals in their respective counties. I also publish Living on the Cheap, a guide to living well on less, and am co-owner of the Living on the Cheap network.
I’m still working on the website infrastructure. To reach us, please email news@musicinsouthflorida.com or teresa@miamionthecheap.com
